Subject
Drug discovery is considered to be the work from the identification of a therapeutic need
in a particular disease area to the time the drug candidate deemed most likely to safety
affect the desired therapeutic benefit is identified. Aim. This study aims to determine if
there is a relation between the number of starting clinical trials (CTs) in the countries of
the European Economic Area (EEA) and health expenditure, total (% of GDP) for the period
2007-2016. Methods. The purpose of the review is to provide a high-level overview of the
number of starting CTs in the countries of the EEA and health expenditure, total (% of
GDP). The data for the starting CTs in the countries of the European Union, Iceland,
Norway and Lichtenstein is extracted from the ClinicalTrials.gov database and the data for
the health expenditure, total (%of GDP) is extracted from the World Bank official website.
Results. The results show that there is a relation between the trend of number of starting
CTs and the health expenditure, total (% of GDP). Conclusion. Medical procedures during
CTs are conducted at no cost to the subjects. There are some financial benefits to many
clinical trial participant also. New drug development is extremely costly and significant for
the industry.
