On a global scale, the need for clean water, free of various pollutants such as microplastics, heavy metals, biological waste, is growing. New materials are being developed in order to purify water and they need to be efficient, widespread, stable in the aquatic environment and non-toxic. Nanoparticles constructed from metal oxides are being extensively investigated for such application due to their specific properties and high adsorption capacity. The present study aims to follow the influence of various factors in the synthesis of α-Fe2O3 nanoparticles, which will contribute to optimization in the preparation and adsorption characteristics of the formulations. Most of the synthesis methods described in the literature are multi-step and time-consuming to obtain the final products. Among them, the coprecipitation method is particularly attractive due to its low cost, high purity, short preparation time, high homogeneity, well-crystallized product, and relatively low reaction temperature. Reported formulations were compared and hematite calcination was obtained at different temperatures and different calcination times. Differences in crystallinity and particle sizes were determined by X-ray powder diffraction. On the basis of their physicochemical characterization, studies were conducted to evaluate the adsorption capacity against heavy metals - Cr6+, Pb2+, Cd2+.
