Subject
We have studied novel polymer-based electrolytes, which are also nanocomposites, that are of interest as materials for mini-mobile energy storage devices. We report results from complex electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) of NaIO4 salt-complexed poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) polymer blends doped with Graphene Oxide (GO) nanoparticles. By solution casting, such Na ion-conducting polymer-based nanocomposite solid electrolytes were obtained as thin films with a thickness of 150 µm. In the PEO/PVP polymer blend, the PEO:PVP ratio was 70:30 weight percent (wt%). The concentration of the salt sodium metaperiodate NaIO4 in the produced solid electrolytes was kept fixed at 10 wt%. The GO nanosheets were dispersed with concentration of 0.2; 0.4 and 0.6 wt%. The GO monolayer average length was 5 μm and thickness was 2 nm. Samples of GO/PEO/PVP/NaIO4 were studied by EIS in the frequency range 1 Hz – 1 MHz of the applied electric field. By EIS, the values of their ion conductivity were determined as depending on the concentration of GO nanodopants. It was estimated that the ionic conductivity of GO/PEO/PVP/NaIO4 nanocomposite electrolytes is considerably increased upon addition of GO nanoparticles. At 0.6 wt% GO, the Na ion conductivity of GO/PEO/PVP/NaIO4 is enhanced by a factor of 12 as compared to undoped PEO/PVP/NaIO4 basic electrolyte. Such an effect found for the prepared nanocomposite solid electrolytes with GO nanodopants is promising for Na+ electrolyte applications.
